# Spotify Connection Diagnosis & Fix

## 🔍 **Current Issue**
- Only 2 genres loading (Afrobeats, Amapiano) instead of all 14
- Made for You showing 0 tracks
- New Releases showing 0 tracks
- Trending working (19 tracks)

## 🎯 **Root Cause Analysis**
The issue is likely one of these:

### 1. **Spotify API Credentials Issue**
- Invalid or expired `SPOTIFY_CLIENT_ID` / `SPOTIFY_CLIENT_SECRET`
- Rate limiting from too many requests
- App not properly configured in Spotify Developer Dashboard

### 2. **API Endpoint Restrictions**
- Featured playlists endpoint might be restricted
- Recommendations endpoint failing for certain genres
- Search working but recommendations failing

### 3. **Genre Processing Issue**
- Some genres not recognized by Spotify's recommendation system
- Fallback search not working for certain genres

## 🛠 **Immediate Fixes Applied**

### Backend Improvements (`server/app.py`):
1. **Added startup connection test** - Tests Spotify API on server start
2. **Enhanced genre processing** - Better error handling for each genre
3. **Improved logging** - Shows exactly where each API call fails
4. **Added fallbacks** - If recommendations fail, tries search instead

### Test Script Created:
- `test_spotify_connection.py` - Run this to test your Spotify credentials

## 🚀 **How to Fix This**

### Step 1: Test Spotify Connection
```bash
cd server
python test_spotify_connection.py
```

### Step 2: Check Your Credentials
Verify your `.env` file has valid credentials:
```bash
SPOTIFY_CLIENT_ID=your_actual_client_id
SPOTIFY_CLIENT_SECRET=your_actual_client_secret
```

### Step 3: Restart Backend with Logging
```bash
cd server
python app.py
```
Watch the console for:
- "✅ Spotify API connection successful"
- Or error messages showing what's failing

### Step 4: Check Spotify Developer Dashboard
1. Go to https://developer.spotify.com/dashboard
2. Make sure your app is still active
3. Check if you need to regenerate credentials
4. Verify your app has the right permissions

## 🔧 **Expected Backend Logs**
After restart, you should see:
```
🔑 Initializing with Spotify Client ID: 5f573c962...
✅ Spotify API connection successful
🎵 Starting comprehensive discovery with X recently played tracks
🎵 Processing genre: afrobeats
✅ Found 20 tracks for afrobeats via genre search
🎵 Processing genre: amapiano
✅ Found 20 tracks for amapiano via genre search
... (and so on for all 14 genres)
```

## 🚨 **If Credentials Are Invalid**
1. **Go to Spotify Developer Dashboard**
2. **Create new app** or **regenerate secret**
3. **Update your `.env` file**
4. **Restart the backend**

## 📊 **Expected Results After Fix**
- **Made for You**: 25 personalized tracks
- **New Releases**: 25 tracks from featured playlists
- **Trending**: 25 popular tracks (already working)
- **Genres**: All 14 genres with 20 tracks each
- **Albums**: Trending and new album releases

The enhanced logging will show exactly which API calls are failing and why!
